Music- and Momentum-Inspired Food for Thought

How Google Chrome’s simple “Momentum” extension forever changed my browsing experience.

The day that I looked over my General Assembly classmate’s shoulder to ask him about the “Momentum” extension, my browsing experience was forever changed.

Just a small software program, this Google Chrome extension spread across my Snapchat stories and my friends (and friends of friends), who, like me, all seek out ways to organize their lives and get their daily dose of encouragement / motivation / self-improvement tip.

The concept and UI is minimalisticclean and simple.

Open a new Google Chrome tab.

Be greeted with a dashboard with the time, day’s focus, a beautifully-captivating, scenic, HD image from some pocket of the globe, an inspirational quote, marked with a todo list feature.

So, why is everyone asking me how they can also transform their browser? This productivity app simply inspires:

  1. To make each day count by increasing focus and productivity via task tracking and reminders,
  2. A little push of motivation and hope for an even brighter and better day than the last,
  3. A daily, friendly reminder of the abundant beauty surrounding us in our world, and
  4. A personal, human element to our screens.

And it’s genius because, unlike advertisements, a user chooses to be greeted this way, every day and every time he or she opens up a new tab, to stay grounded from traveling to Facebook for the 100th time that day — and, let’s face it, in these ADD-stricken times of getting to that NYT/Medium/TechCrunch article, Hype Machine Stack, or the latest trending YouTube video at some point during the day or week, that means we likely open a tab at least 50 times a day on average.

Just as Momentum complements my day to day, #MusicIsMyDrugOfChoice Vol. 4: Chase Those Dreams was inspired to complement my current life mood and sentiment – for the reasons I am excited to rise at 6 AM and feel that sense of purpose and clarity these days. Music can feel like that perfect breath of fresh air, or coming up for air – depending on the situation, mood, struggle or success. Whether we’re greeted with cheery, dancy, melancholy, beautiful tracks, they serve the same simple purpose – to inspire some thought, motivation, productivity, and gratefulness in our days.

So pair up the latest volume of #MusicIsMyDrugOfChoice with the memorably-fitting, drops of wisdom I’ve gathered through Momentum, and the unparalleled support from family and friends in the past couple weeks. They have propelled me in this daring, exciting, transitionary phase of my career, so let them propel you even further in your endeavors.

Happy Monday, and say sayonara to those Monday blues!

You need to do what you’re really passionate about, and that makes you really happy, and then you get really good at that thing, and you think about it all the time; you think about it when you’re sleeping; you think about it in your dreams; you think about it more than any other human being. Naturally, you get really good at it, and potentially the best at it. But, once you get to that place, you’re an expert. And then, I think, you know, you’ve earned the right to speak your mind. – Nihal Mehta, The Inaugural M1 “Mobile-First” Summit NYC, 5/20
